Data4Life - more quality of life through the innovative integration of technology, data, and research
What is Data4Life?
Data4Life is a nonprofit organization, originating as a research project at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute for Digital Engineering gGmbH (under the name Gesundheitscloud) and funded by the Hasso Plattner Foundation. Data4Life strives to make a meaningful contribution with technology that significantly improves healthcare and research and enables people to increase their own quality of life independently.
Data4Life applies digital technology to a health system that was barely digital in the past. By developing innovative solutions for research, health professionals, and individuals, Data4Life makes it possible to attain new medical insights. Data4Life provides researchers with better access to increasing amounts of high quality health data, helping them to gain new medical insights. Data4Life empowers citizens with a better understanding of their personal health data so they can make informed decisions about their health and improve their quality of life.
Cov-App for the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin
Data4Life supports the Charité in Berlin, one of the largest university hospitals in Europe, in the implementation of an application for improving examination and processing of people with suspected coronavirus at the Virchow Clinic campus. Data4Life is working together with the Charité to develop this solution, which serves to transmit relevant medical information, support doctors during consultations in the coronavirus outpatient clinic, and help shorten the waiting period for all arrivals.
Building patient registries
Insufficient research is being done, especially in the case of rare diseases, because it’s often not possible to amass a group of people large enough for a proper study. Data4Life supports researchers in establishing national and international patient registries, creating a better basis for research and accelerating the process of gaining insights for people living with rare diseases.
Data4Life is nonprofit and independent
Our nonprofit and independent status is a basis for ethical behavior essential to collaborating with all relevant actors in the health industry when dealing with sensitive data. Data4Life aims to offer people solutions that protect them from conflicts of interest of other providers.
Data4Life is BSI certified
Data4Life aspires to develop and conduct all technology and collaborations in accordance with the highest standards of security. Data4Life protects the privacy and independence of individuals in an environment of sensitive data to the highest standards of security and with the latest knowledge. For this reason, Data4Life was certified in July 2019 by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) as ISO 27001 compliant on the basis of “IT-Grundschutz.”
Vision & future prospects: Why do we do it?
We started the organization to establish greater health awareness and to offer people solutions that help them improve their health and quality of life in the long term. As a nonprofit company, we have the freedom to act in the interest of others and society as a whole, thus working together with other actors in the health system to bring relevant products to the market. Our goal is to provide people in the near future with the opportunity to donate their health data to research so they can profit from research findings in the long term. This is another key component of our contribution to helping people improve their health and quality of life.
